Dialog is healthy, debate is a good thing.
Every generation feels this same pain - boomers are not skipping off into the sunset loaded with moneybags. Yes, my generation is a large one - but I find lots of people my age saving hard for the day when the piper comes due, the market crashes... and putting it away for their kids! What is unconscionable is the lack of leadership and will to fix the SS issue - it's as easy as lifting the cap and making high earners pay more into it! Easy fix.
"we have paid for nothing else, like the court system" - You left off the two wars, veterans benefits etc. - a huge elephant in the room. The wars alone add $1 to $2 trillion conservatively. Paying for 30 million more on the insurance rolls is far cheaper than having those same numbers show up in emergency rooms uninsured, leaving someone holding the bag.
"Now let's add Bush's prescription plan, all the bailouts" - Let's add also the Bush tax cuts for the very wealthy, the malevolent abuse of power enabled by the Citizens United court case, the total manipulation of all branches of gov't. by big money.
Maybe we should be filled with despair - but I'm not. Humans are geared for survival, built into our DNA. Creative solutions, united actions... vote with your legs or your pen, but we all need to stop waiting for someone else to fix it. Don't get down, get active.

Maybe we should put Roberts in charge of dealing with SS.
Oh, whoops. That really would be unconstitutional.
But seriously ... I'm kind of in shock ... somebody actually put logic and the law ahead of their personal politics in today's era?!? I didn't know they could DO that anymore. Agree with Roberts' conclusion or not, that kind of independent thinking is impressive. It even makes me optimistic about America. Silly me, maybe. But still.

The problem with all the gloom & doom sorts is it's all been said before...and fizzled. Seriously. Malthus and population growth, and a thousand more. Putting your head in the sand is always bad, but unfortunately, it works. Having a Polly Anna attitude is good for survival, and it functions well over the past few hundred yrs. SS can be easily fixed with an adjustment of a yr or two, and not that I am saying other problems are as easy, but underlying assumptions ALWAYS change, and the "sky is falling" never turns out to be as bad as predicted.
Our "end of empire" is much more likely to look like Rob's homeland did the past 100, over the next 100 yrs, if you follow...
And the really great part about optimism? When you "win", everyone wins...who wants to be "right" about the end, eh?

I'm kind of surprised to read this from you WT. Pollyanna only works for survival when real survival isn't at stake, but instead, as you correctly observed, people perceive their survival is threatened. Going head in the sand when your survival is truly threatened only makes you an easy target.
Now, with all of that said, yesterday was no big deal. I'm actually of the opinion that Justice Roberts knew exactly what he was doing and by so narrowly defining ACA as a tax with microns wide coverage of the Commerce clause, he very effectively restricted Congress' ability for future expansive regulatory moves. Obama said as much back in 2005 when he opposed Roberts' appointment because he did not trust his (Roberts') political philosophy regarding whether or not the "....Commerce Clause empowers Congress to speak on those issues of broad national concern that may be only tangentially related to what is easily defined as interstate commerce."
I stumbled on this article yesterday and it made perfect sense to me...

I think we missed each other: I am talking big picture, "how bad is it?" world views that color how you live day to day...I've heard so many doom and gloom predictions, from the v specific regarding financial markets destroying all that I own (87? 99? 02? 07?) to global warming to extinction...or to the v general on...blah, blah, blah...you get the idea, each with v well reasoned, well articulated sets of assumptions as to why a particular worst case scenario was absolutely certain...
And of course, what happened?
zzzzz....
So, yeah, I don't see the end of the world or even the end of various activities that I hold near and dear just around the corner...but it's as much due to cynicism and realism (vis-a-vis all the failed arguments of the past) in my case; Polly Anna got kicked out me a few yrs what with all the bad luck on the medical front!
